is it wrong that my parents won’t help pay for my college education? even part of it?

i don’t expect a penny from them, i was raised to be independent and have worked since i was 14. but my friends and other family members act concern and try to get me upset that my brother got 5 years of college, cars and expenses paid for. and i’ve been given nothing…

i used to get upset about money and my parents, but i realized that is not going to change a thing (and ive got it better than so many people out there to have a roof over my head). and i am proud i have been able to support myself so far. but i have turned down going to better colleges because of the cost. and honestly i must say my parents combined income is 270,000.

i have used up my savings and am applying for loans i dont even apply for federal loans. should i be mad at my parents? it is THEIR money? plus my dad had surgery so they may not be able to help me?

It sucks, I know. The same thing happened for me. My dad didn’t pay a penny for my college education, but he paid for my step sister’s education, bought her a car, and let her build a house on their land.

But you know what? I went on and decided to do it all myself, and I’m really, really proud of that. There are TONS of scholarships, also fill out the FAFSA and see if you can get a Pell grant. I had to take out a student loan, too…

Finally my dad called me one day telling me how proud he was of my for paying my own rent./school/car and doing it all on my own, and how my (much older) stepsister moved back with them and is acting kinda wild. It didn’t erase the hurt of him not helping, but I did feel kinda validated:)

So it sucks, yeah. It really sucks. It hurts, and it feels unfair. But if there’s nothing you can do to change it, don’t let anyone stop you from achieving your goals. Do some research on the net and talk to a school counselor- it feels intimidating to go it alone, but it’s easier than you think, and there are TONS of people willing to help you!

Good luck! I’m already proud of you, and I don’t even know you;)

ps. and disregard that answer above me- you CAN do it, tons of people do it. Hundreds of students go it alone! You’re smart enough, and capable.
