Getting an education can be very expensive. I know this. Once you go beyond earning a bachelor’s degree, you no longer are able to get anything but Stafford loans to pay for college. The cost of college just to earn a Masters is around $50,000. However, if you’re just starting out and you are a single person or a single mom, you can get the Pell Grant from the federal government to pay for college. Here’s how you do it.
The Pell Grant started several decades ago and was offered to many colleges and universities so that students could go to school that did not have the funds to do so. The problem with this grant is that many people abused it. People would go to school for decades living off of this money which took it away from those that actually wanted to complete a college education.
Now instead of having thousands if not millions of people that were living off the system, we now have a system that allows single mothers and students alike to apply for this money to cover their first couple years of college.
Here’s how you do that:
First you have to file your state income tax as well as your federal. This is information that you will need when you begin filling out your FAFSA in January at the beginning of the year.
Remember, you must have this paperwork done early. Whatever you fill out in January is typically used for the fall semester of that year. This is your time to figure out exactly what your major is going to be while the paperwork and processing of your Pell Grant is being done.
Second, you should have an idea of what university you need to go to prior to filling out the paperwork. You can have your financial information from the government sent to up to three different campuses of your choice. This way, once you make your choice about where you want to use the federal government’s money, your institution without that information available.
By starting out early, single moms and students that are just out of high school can begin repairing for their college education during the winter and you ready to go by fall when they start back at college. Don’t wait too long because federal funding is notoriously limited even though they offer billions of dollars each year to needy students that want to earn a college education.
