question about student loan offset?
I had a student loan in default, but rehabilitated the loan. Got out of default in Nov. 2007. Department of Ed. sent me a letter that told me to wait 4 weeks before filing taxes to prevent any offset. The letter gave me a number to call to confirm that there will be no offset with the IRS. I call the IRS number, and spoke with rep. The IRS rep said that my account showed a federal debt. I assume they were refering to my student loan which is the only federal debt I would owe. I call the department of ed, and they say that my account is in good standing and not in default. I call the Treasury department Financial Management Services, and they say that they show no debt to be offset in there systems. However, the IRS says otherwise. I am trying to determine when I can file taxes as I do not wish for my refund to be offset. Is it possible that the IRS just hasn’t got this info in their computers. Or does the IRS not matter, most info says the treasury will be the ones to take my $?
Perhaps you should wait 4 weeks (around March 1st) to file your taxes. It wouldn’t help for you to file early just so they can take it because it takes forever to update the computer system.
