Can I get a student loan?
I completed my high school in 2006 and have been abroad for a couple of years. Now I want to go back to school and do not want to ask my parents to support my education. So basically I’m wondering if there are any services in general that will allow me to take a loan without me having any money or income which will cover my boarding/lodging and my class expenses. Do they give loans like that? Does financial aid exist for students in a situation like mine? And question number two: When will I have to start paying it off? I prefer to concentrate just on the academics and have no part time job until I land myself a job (which would be after I graduate, hence the education)? If it makes any difference, I will be taking up computer or software engineering. Thank you any help is greatly appreciated…
If you consider yourself an independent student, then there are grants and loans, as well as campus based aid that you are eligible for.
If you attend school at least half time, payments can be deferred until 6mos. after graduation, as long as you keep up academic standing, and don’t fall below certain GPA.
As a matter of fact, you are eligible for more aid amounts as an independent, and don’t have to supply financial info from parents; fed’l aid, that is. Aid covers all school-elated expenses, including housing-room and board, supplies, transportation, even personal maintenance items- as long as they have an impact upon your studies. Fed’l loan programs are available, Fed’l work study assignments working on campus on a part-time basis are there to supplement your living expenses, too.
Private loans are an option to cover any remaining fees that your fed’l aid does not cover, up to the cost of attendance, if they’re certified by the school. Some loans, which are all credit based, and with a co-signer, offer greater approval rates snd lower interest rates help.
There are loans that aren’t certified, and you can apply for those, as well Apply with a co-signer, if you don’t have established credit or poor credit. Once again, all aid can be deferred until 6-9 mos. after graduation, you leave school[withdraw , drop-out, or fall below half time attendance]
So, yes there are aid options available to help with education costs. Check with your school’s financial aid office, and they should outline your options, and recommend lenders, as well.
Good luck!
