Medical doctors: what do you know about the NHSC program?
I am starting my first year of medical school soon, and I applied for the NHSC (National Health Service Corps) scholarship because it would pay for tuition, books, etc. If I am accepted, I could possibly graduate from school with zero debt.
However, I was just wondering, how much are doctors paid during their service obligation? I imagine it’s probably less than what doctors can earn in the private sector, but how much less? If the doctor’s salary is significantly less, is it still worth having medical school paid for by the government?
I just thought I should find out before I commit, in case I get stuck earning something like $75K for four years when I could be earning $150K instead, even if I had to pay around $30K a year on student loan repayments.
What do you think?
Also, what are the odds that the government would require me to work in an area I don’t want to? I’d really like to stay in the Pacific Northwest, especially Oregon or Washington.
Thanks.
You get paid a competitive salary and can apply to nhsc hospitals anywhere in the nation. the hospitals are in under served areas in the country which is the whole point of the program.
