Has anyone received Perkins Loan forgiveness/cancellation because of your job?
I’m a recent college grad and I’m looking over my loans that I’ll start repaying in a couple of months. One piece of information caught my attention though…If you’re a teacher, volunteer, or a professional provider or early intervention such as Speech and Language Pathology in my case, then you’re Perkins Loan can be canceled/forgiven over time.
1) Has anyone done this and 2)is it easy to get approved for it?
BTW, I went to school and live in TX.
I live in Kentucky and I got Perkins loan forgiveness this year (and have for the past 3 years). It has really been a big help.
I am a speech-language pathologist in the school system and it is really easy (at least here) to do it. You just need to call the Perkins loan office and every year they will mail you a form to fill out. You have to put your dates of employment (like 07/07-07/08) and then your principal or special ed. director signs it.
After you mail it in, the loan office will send it back to you after it is processed telling you how much your prinicipal is reduced. You can also put your loan in deferment (or maybe forbearance) during this time and you will not have make any payments (although you do still gather interest).
You may want to make sure that the repayment program is still being offered because a lot of places are doing away with these kind of programs–or at least not letting anyone new enroll–because of budget cuts and things.
Hope this helps
