Could I be a school counselor without getting a Masters?

I want to be a high school counselor, and as far as I understand it, I necessarily need an MA in Education Counseling, as well as a certification. Is there any way around that? I’d love to avoid another $40,000 in student loans.

Yes. But it really depends on who’s hiring you.

A simple undergraduate degree will do. Also, you probably need to take a class to get a certificate (this shouldn’t be hard). I bet there are even counselors out there with just an associates (two years in college)

Keep in mind, the higher degree you have, the more qualified you are and the more money you will make.

If you’re applying for a job at a prestigious rich school and someone else with a masters is applying also, they’ll probably pick the other guy. Like I said, it depends on who’s hiring and what they’re looking for. Personally, I dont know why someone with a masters would want a job as a student counselor.

So, basically, no… you don’t need a masters.
