Do you have advice for a terrible debt?
My student loans are in excess of 30,000 dollars. Now, I never finished college, not even two year. I can’t go back because of the defaulted loans and the jobs that I am qualified for will never be able to allow me to pay for anything but the interest, meanwhile the total goes up while I pay a less than minimum fee (which they won’t give me forever and are threatening to garnish my wages). They want 398 dollars a month minimum from me and I can’t even afford the hardship payment of 25 that they have so far allowed me.
Also, I don’t know how long I will be able to remain employed due to declining vision (keratakonis) which is not correctible, headaches, depression, anxiety and stress.
This is a multiple problem question.
If I end up on SSI or SSDI can they garnish my meager income as if it were employment?
Are there any exceptions for disabilities?
Can I go to jail if I am not able to pay it?
They cannot garnish anything from SSI. They can garnish from SSDI, but if you haven’t worked for very many years, you probably won’t even qualify for SSDI, only SSI. And that has nothing whatsoever to do with the fact that Obama was just elected, it’s been that way for a long time now.
I know because I take care of people in their homes who are on SSI and I’ve already checked into whether anything can be garnished from SSI checks. It can’t — the checks are so little that the government won’t allow any monies to be taken from those checks as they are actually below poverty level.
Also, as far as I know, you cannot be put in jail even if you do owe money for college loans. They got rid of debtor’s prison a long time ago — before I was even born and I’m not young, lol! So I wouldn’t worry about jail if I were you.
Take care and I hope things work out for you!
