How do people afford PhD?
Hi. I haven’t researched into this idea much yet but I’d like to hear your answers. Sorry if this sounds like a silly question.
I’m about to start a Masters degree in Physics. I really enjoy this subject and was overjoyed to find out about bursaries and student loans to help pay the costs involved.
I just wanted to know, if I do well with my degree and manage to get a place on a PhD course, how will I pay for it? Are there other student loans etc? I hear that PhDs are equivalent in time invested to full-time jobs so I don’t know if I’d be able to get a job with enough hours to support myself for the entire duration.
Can anyone tell me how most people do it? I don’t have a very financially wealthy family so being dependant in any way on them is out of the question.
A few (mostly part time) students work full time and fund their own PhDs which they do in the evening and at weekends.
However most of them (me included) are fully funded by research bursaries. A research grant is money that is given to the institution which is in charge of the student and then they decide who to give the studentship too (usually by a process of applications and interviews). The amount of money each student receives depends on the subject they are studying and the grant that was awarded but generally the fees are paid by the institution where the student is based.
Good luck with the masters
