What is the best way to handle salary negotiations?

I’ve applied for and interviewed for a job. Based on my qualifications and education, my reqested salary (these are not the actual numbers) is $20,000. The job offers $10,000. Due to financial considerations (student loans), I cannot accept less than $20,000. My education level is way above what they’re offering, but my experience is a bit less than what they want. What is the best way to bridge the gap without seeming greedy?

You need to decide if $20k REALLY is the bottom. You know your expenses and the ‘possibilities’ in this company. If your bottom is $18k, then that’s the bottom. Be honest with them and tell them that you cannot accept lower than $xx and stick with it. Ask what their review policy is. WHEN will you get a chance for a higher salary, get it in writing if it’s ANYTHING other than the company norm.

good luck…
