Money, money, money! Pay up! You want the IRS to give you your tax return when it’s due. After all, the IRS is pretty punctual when you owe THEM money. So why is there a hold up when it comes to getting YOUR money back? It’s not fair, but that’s the way it works. There are many delays when it comes to issuing taxpayer’s refunds. So know the facts and make sure you do what you can to get your refund on time.

I am in a payment plan for last year’s taxes. Can I still get a tax refund for this year?

No. You cannot get your refund if you owe past-due amounts to the IRS. This includes Federal Tax, State Tax, a Student Loan, or Child Support. The IRS will automatically apply the refund to the debt owed. And if the refund doesn’t take care of debt, you have to continue paying on it.

I lost my refund check. Can I get a new one?

Yes. Call the IRS and request a new one. Then complete Form 3911 “Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund.” They can usually send the replacement within six to eight weeks.

What is a split refund?

A split refund lets you divide your refund and deposit the funds in up to three different accounts. This means you can allocate your refund to your checking AND your savings accounts. It saves you the trouble of moving part of your refund to the account you’d like it to be in later.

How do I split my refund?

Simply complete and attach Form 8888 “Direct Deposit of Refund to More Than One Account” to your Tax Return. Tell the IRS how much and to which of your accounts you want your refund deposited.

Tax Tip: Double check everything. You have to watch out for errors on your tax returns. Did you include the correct name, address, and telephone number. Small issues like that can result in long delays with your Tax Return. Double check your form before you send it out.
