Student Loan Forgiveness, who qualifies?
I help ex-offenders for a living as a Case Manager. I heard that certain jobs qualify you for getting your loans forgiven, something I could really use given the salary for public service jobs. Does anyone know the rules/regulations to this or where to find some more information?
What kind of loan you have and weather or not you have consolidated makes a big difference of if your loans are eligible to be forgiven.
Perkins loans are probably the easiest with the criteria listed on page 34 of this publication. Federal stafford loans have some ways to get them forgiven listed on page 35.
Private loans and consolidated loans can not normally be forgiven.
Also note, this publication is a year old and laws are changed all the time. I recall the Stafford loan program being easier but can’t seem to locate the information. I would contact your lender directly and they will be able to tell you the most up to date info on getting your loans forgiven.
