what do I do about this debt?
I rented a flat from a housing association a year ago and when I left i owed two thousand on it. Yeah I know I shoulda paid it but now a debt recovery agency have tracked me down – to another city! But I am a full time student now living in halls on a student loan I cannot afford to pay them fully. It is the first letter i have received from them, will they accept a small payment plan? I will contact them as I know I won’t get out of this but what are they allowed to do to me? I really have no way of paying them at the moment.
Pink, not only am I fully aware of this, I already stated I would be willing to pay a payment plan. I just wanted some advice on their procedures. The patronism in quite uneccessary thank you.
Creditors may use a debt collection agency to ask you to pay off the debt.
Debt collectors aren’t court officials and don’t have the same powers as bailiffs. They can’t enter your home or seize your possessions.
Creditors and debt collectors must follow OFT (Office of Fair Trading) debt collection guidance – pages 14 to 19 of the OFT leaflet ‘Debt collection guidance’ detail how debt collectors should behave.
