Can anyone help me with the Student Loans Company (U.K.) ? ? ?
My student Loan is currently the minimum amount that anyone can receive and it only just covers my rent. So I use my overdraft for living expenses and pay that off over the summer but this year my rent has gone up but my loan remains the same.
My parents wont give me any money because they wanted me to study Chemistry at Southampton University and I chose not to. They let me stay with them over the summer but I have to pay rent so I only go home over the summer when I can get prearranged part-time work.
The problem I have is that The Student Loans Company work out the Maintenance loan requirement from what my parents earn presuming that they will be supporting me throughout my time at university. I am studying Architecture which is very time consuming so cant get a job.
Is there anything I can do to increase my loan ?
I have a similar problem.
My parents can’t help me financially and so I have to fund myself completely. It is a problem though because they earn too much officially for me to get grants etc.
I did some research and you have to show that you have supported yourself financially for 3 years before Student Loans will consider you separate from your parents and eligible for any grants.
I think you should contact Student Services at your uni because they should have systems in place for this sort of problem. The University will not want you to quit because of financial reasons, especially nowadays when they are meant to have safety nets for students of all backgrounds. Go to them and really explain your problem saying you are really struggling. See what they say and also get in touch with Student Loans just to check their policy on this again
