If you file for bankruptcy, does it apply to student loans?
I am currently in a financial mess because I’ve gone on disability from my job (long term.) Now I’ve discovered that my student loans (which were being garnished) are not fully paid. I had previously thought they were finally paid off because the garnishments ended, but I found out today that I still owe the US Dept. of Education over $16,000. I found this out because my tax refund went directly to them.
If I file for bankruptcy, does this void my student loans? I have been told by some that it does not.
