Problem getting a student loan?
I am 20 years old and planning on moving from one community college to a new community college this fall. I have good but limited credit history (i.e. I have made all my credit card payments and such on time, but have not had the accounts for more then 2 years.) Well I get little to no financial aid and the federal loan I get just barely covers cost of attendance. Biggest problem I have is both of my parents have bad credit (accounts in collection and such, so Parent loans are out of the question) so I have no one to turn to for a co-signer. Is there a private student loan I can get that will allow a student with limited credit history get enough money for housing, books, a new computer, and extra living expenses. I’ve looked everywhere but just don’t know where to turn. Please help, I don’t have much time before the next semester starts. If you need anymore information just ask.
Have you met with the adviser in your Financial Aid office at the school? If, after that you still have no help, contact a local bank to see if they work with college students who need loans. You may need to file as an “Independent,” student meaning you have to completely support yourself without your parents’ help. Your Financial Aid Officer should be able to educate you on this too. Check out the requirements for Stafford loan programs as well as any state funded financial aid programs. Also, this might not work in time, but you should consider getting a job with a company that provides tuition reimbursement. Some companies will pay up to 100% of your college tuition if you remain employed with them and maintain a B- or C minimum grade. Good luck.
