I just realized today that interest paid for student loans is tax-deductible. Can I retroactively claim money?
It was never made obvious to me that I the interest I was paying for my student loans is tax-deductible (I feel someone should be responsible for this, gimme a name to sue.)
Can I retroactively claim back refund for not reporting the student loan interest I paid back in 2007.
You can sue yourself for not reading about it in the instructions.
You can file an amended return (1040X) for 2007 and claim the deduction. You would need to do the same for 2008 if you have already filed. If you have not filed, see Form 1040A.
