Why am I classed as dependent student despite recieving no money from my parents?
I don’t understand this. I am applying for my student loan with the SLC here in the UK and the amount of grant I recieve depends on how much income my parents get. And because I am under 25, I am classed as a dependent student. Why is this even relevant though? I haven’t had a penny from my parents since I left school (5 years ago) so why am I classed as dependent and why is their income taken in to account when decided on how much grant I recieve?
This is the way that Congress established the federal financial aid system to work. They believe that parents retain a responsibility to assist their children through their first four year degree providing they are not over the age of 24, married, supporting children or dependents of their own, a veteran of the armed forces, an orphan or ward of the court, and are not enrolled in a graduate degree.
Talk to your congress-person and let them know how unfair the system is.
